“Edging” by blink-182
blink is back and so are new covers! I really like Travis’ standard pop-punk tom grooves and style throughout the song. Though the main riffs aren’t complicated, he throws in some pretty fun and fast triplet-based fills that I’ve embellished and transcribed below. Be sure to check out all my interactive transcriptions from Soundslice.
A few of my favorite parts…
1. Verse 1b Groove
It’s important to note that the entire song is felt as swung 8th notes (not straight). This is the 2nd half of the 1st verse where Travis adds the extra hi-hat chick on the “& of 4.” I’ve notated using 1 floor tom, though in my video, I utilize both available floor toms by alternating between the 1st floor and high rack, and bottom floor and bottom rack. Makes for more movement but a lot more interesting in my opinion!
2. Verse 2b Groove
This groove is similar Verse 2b above, but we’ve switched over to the hi-hat instead of the toms. It’s deceivingly tricky to properly accent that last hi-hat on the “& of 4” while getting back into the hi-hat groove. I added some “herta” fills to close it out.
3. Pre-Chorus Fills
Here’s where things get real fun! Travis keeps the kick constant on quarter notes throughout all of these fills, which actually helps lock in the time and limbs while moving around the kit. Otherwise, we’re just filling in 8th-note triplets and quarter-note triplets between the snare and toms.
4. Outro Fills
You’ll want to slow all of these down to nail the stickings, especially the last one!
